Custom Packaging Printing in Toronto: How to Spec and Order
Custom packaging printing in Toronto means applying brand artwork, color, and finishing to the boxes, mailers, sleeves, and printed cartons your product ships in, then producing them at the quantity your launch actually needs. Do it well and the unboxing carries your brand. Do it blind and you overpay for the wrong press, miss a bleed line, or wait on a reprint you cannot afford. This guide walks a Toronto buyer through the decisions that decide cost and quality: which press fits your run, what can be printed, how to hand off print-ready files, and how the order moves from brief to dock.
Key Takeaways
- Run size sets the press. Digital wins short, variable, and fast; offset wins high-volume bulk. The cost crossover now sits near 10,000 prints, up from about 2,000 in 2010.
- Toronto is Canada’s largest market, with 6,202,225 people in the census metropolitan area, so packaging competes for attention on crowded shelves and busy porches.
- A print-ready file needs a correct dieline, bleed and safety margins, CMYK plus any spot colors, and a proofed color target before the press runs.
- C17 Media prints fully custom product packaging and runs that scale from a single bespoke piece to more than 1,000,000 units, with finishing, fulfillment, and distribution handled in one shop.
- Ordering is a sequence: brief, quote, dieline and proof, production, then delivery. Lock each step before the next to avoid costly reprints.
What is custom packaging printing, and who in Toronto needs it?
Canada’s retailers posted $865.2 billion in operating revenue in 2024, a 3.0% increase, and Ontario alone accounted for 37.7% of that total, according to Statistics Canada. Packaging is where a large share of that spending meets the customer. Custom packaging printing is the production side of that moment: dielines, substrates, ink, and finishing turned into branded boxes, folding cartons, printed mailers, labels, and sleeves that protect a product and sell it at the same time.
Who orders it in Toronto? Retail and consumer-goods brands, food and beverage makers, cosmetics and supplement companies, subscription and ecommerce sellers, and events teams that need short branded runs. The common thread is a crowded market. Toronto is the most populous census metropolitan area in Canada at 6,202,225 people, Statistics Canada reports, and C17 Media is based in Richmond Hill, one of the 24 municipalities inside that metro region. C17 Media prints fully custom product packaging and work that ranges from structured packaging to interactive mailers, so a Toronto brand can keep design, print, and finishing under one digital and offset roof.
Digital or offset: which press fits your packaging run?
Run size is the single biggest cost lever in packaging printing, and the break-even point between the two processes has moved. The cost crossover where offset overtakes digital now sits near 10,000 A4-equivalent prints, up from roughly 2,000 in 2010, and lands closer to 4,000 for a modern high-efficiency B1 perfecting press, Ricoh and Keypoint Intelligence report. Below that line, digital usually costs less per unit and starts faster. Above it, offset pulls ahead on long bulk runs.

Digital is the right call for pilot runs, limited-edition SKUs, regional test markets, and any job that needs variable data, such as individually addressed mailers or serialized codes. Offset earns its keep when you are committing to a national print run and want the lowest unit cost at volume. You do not have to pick in the dark: C17 Media runs both color-calibrated digital and offset processes and quotes work from a single bespoke piece up to more than 1,000,000 units, so the quote itself tells you which side of the crossover your order lands on.
What packaging substrates and structures can be printed?
Most packaging decisions come down to three structural families, and the right one depends on weight, protection, and shelf presence. Folding carton board suits retail boxes for cosmetics, supplements, food, and electronics. Corrugated handles shipping and ecommerce mailers that take abuse in transit. Rigid setup boxes and printed sleeves signal premium positioning for gifting and higher-ticket goods. Printed mailers, wraps, and labels round out the mix for subscription and direct-to-consumer brands.
The point of this guide is not to guess your structure from a blog post. It is to arrive at a quote with the right questions answered: product dimensions and weight, the quantity you need now versus over a year, whether the box ships on its own or sits inside a shipper, and the look you are after. Bring a sample of a package you like, even a competitor’s, and a prepress conversation can match it to a producible spec. For retail launches that pair packaging with in-store presence, the same artwork can carry across to large-format retail and point-of-purchase graphics so the shelf and the box read as one brand.
How to prepare print-ready packaging artwork
Small and mid-sized businesses rarely have a prepress department, and they are the bulk of who orders packaging. As of December 2024 there were 1.10 million employer businesses in Canada, and 1.08 million of them, or 98.2%, were small businesses, according to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. If that is you, four file basics keep a job moving instead of bouncing back.
- Dieline: supply the structural template as vector artwork, with fold, cut, and glue lines on their own layers. The art is built to the dieline, not the other way around.
- Bleed and safety: extend background color past the trim, and pull critical text and logos well inside the fold and cut lines so nothing clips when the box is die-cut.
- Color: build in CMYK, and call out any spot or Pantone brand colors explicitly rather than hoping a process build matches. C17 Media prints on color-calibrated digital and offset processes, which is what lets a proof predict the final result.
- Compliance marks: leave room for barcodes, ingredient or regulatory panels, and recycling marks before the layout is locked, not after.
Approve a proof against those four points before the press runs. A proof is far cheaper than a reprint, and it is the last clean moment to catch a wrong Pantone or a cramped nutrition panel.
Fulfillment and distribution for Toronto packaging
Printing the box is half the job; getting it to customers is the other half, and ecommerce keeps raising the stakes. Retail e-commerce operating revenue in Canada reached $73.7 billion in 2024, a 9.0% increase year over year, per Statistics Canada. More orders shipping to more doors means more packaging moving through a supply chain, and a reprint stranded in a warehouse helps no one.
Keeping print and logistics in one shop removes handoffs. C17 Media offers finishing, fulfillment, and distribution alongside production, so a run can be printed, kitted, stored, and shipped on one work order. For direct mail and subscription boxes, that also unlocks variable data: individually addressed mailers and serialized inserts printed inline rather than stickered on afterward. For a Toronto brand managing a launch across the metro region, that is fewer vendors, fewer shipping legs, and one team accountable for the result.
How to order custom packaging printing in Toronto
Treat the order as a sequence and each step protects the one after it. First, write a short brief: product, dimensions, quantity now and over a year, target look, and in-hand date. Second, get a quote that names the press, substrate, finishing, and run size so you can see which side of the cost crossover you land on. Third, approve the dieline and a color proof. Fourth, production runs. Fifth, finishing, fulfillment, and delivery. Lock each stage before releasing the next.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I print my packaging digitally or on an offset press?
Let run size decide. Digital usually costs less and starts faster for short runs, test markets, and variable-data jobs, while offset wins on long bulk runs. The crossover now sits near 10,000 A4-equivalent prints, so a quote that names your quantity tells you which process fits.
Does C17 Media print custom product packaging, or only flat print?
C17 Media prints fully custom product packaging and work that runs from structured packaging to interactive mailers, alongside its digital and offset printing. Quantities range from a single bespoke piece to more than 1,000,000 units.
What files do I need to supply for a packaging quote?
A vector dieline with fold, cut, and glue layers, artwork built with proper bleed and safety margins, CMYK plus any named spot or Pantone colors, and space reserved for barcodes and regulatory panels. If you do not have a dieline, bring product dimensions and a reference sample and a prepress team can build one.
Can C17 Media handle fulfillment and shipping, not just printing?
Yes. C17 Media offers finishing, fulfillment, and distribution alongside production, so a run can be printed, kitted, stored, and shipped on one work order, including individually addressed mailers.
Does C17 Media serve Toronto if it is located in Richmond Hill?
Yes. Richmond Hill is one of the 24 municipalities inside the Toronto census metropolitan area, so C17 Media serves brands across Toronto and the wider Greater Toronto Area from its Richmond Hill shop.
